ARTIST STATEMENT
Izzy Amphlett creates fragmented sculptural environments shaped by internet culture, feminine self-surveillance and the disappointment of post-girlboss feminism.
Working across sculpture, installation and moving image, her practice explores how femininity and the body are shaped by digital culture, surveillance, violence and systems of power. Industrial and bodily materials create forms that appear simultaneously vulnerable and mechanical: assembled, suspended and fragmented through the structures that surround them. Her work often operates as a form of self-portraiture, examining the point at which an externally imposed gaze becomes inseparable from self-perception. Moving-image works extend this through performance and the mediated body, exploring tensions between agency and objectification, intimacy and spectatorship.Drawing from internet culture, advertising and body-horror cinema, Amphlett’s process is driven by intuition and subconscious association. The work occupies the contradictions between empowerment and commodification, autonomy and consumption, visibility and vulnerability.
